There was a fatal crash early Friday morning on Frederick Rd. near Oella Ave. The car was reportedly traveling at a high speed around 12:15pm and hit a tree. An Ellicott City resident was killed and the other was injured.
Please take this incident as a reminder to be very careful when driving around here. Even if you aren't driving recklessly, there are many other hazards such as pedestrians, wild animals, slick roads, and other drivers that can cause you to lose control of your car. Keep both eyes out for hazards, especially since the mill will open soon and traffic will increase.

Meeting on land planning and development issues
Jay Patel has organized a 4/9 meeting with/at councilman Sam Moxley's office in Catonsville at 6:00p.m. to discuss land planning and development issues related to the Treuth Property adjacent to Oella Ave, south of Westchester. A request to increase the allowed housing density should the land be developed was submitted during this year's re-zoning bonanza. Interested persons are welcome to attend.
Be careful walking near Lillies Lane--damaged water valve
Just adjacent to 1017 Lillies La., in the right-of-way for Oella Ave, a water meter vault has been damaged. The top to the vault which is approximately 16" wide and 24" deep has collapsed into the ground creating a potential safety hazard for pedestrians and pets. Nearby owners will attempt to mark the area with yellow flagging until Baltimore Co. ( which has been notified) is able to effect repairs.

New Blog Feature: Eco-Oella Tip
The blogger has noticed that some Oellians are not placing recycling at the curb on Friday and are generating a lot of trash. This has prompted her to begin a new semi-regular eco tips feature on the blog in an effort to convert those who aren't eco-conscious (and maybe to teach something new those who are). These will typically be fairly short bits. The blogger invites residents to post their own related tips or comments on the blog. Here goes the first installment:
RECYCLE METAL CANS
If you recycle your aluminum and steel cans for one year, you could save 414 pounds of CO2 from entering the atmosphere (for reference, your car emits around 12,000 pounds per year), and 95% of the energy and 74% of the steel required for new cans. Effect if everyone in the US did it for a year: like taking 3,934,118 cars off the road. Staggering!

Landscaping needs
Is there an area of HOA common property that needs landscaping attention or maintenance? Dead bush? Erosion? Please post a comment to tells us about the area that needs some help. Some areas are part of a long-term landscaping improvement plan (e.g. area next to Lilies Lane driveway, Pleasant Hill outhouses, damaged Long Brick Row pine trees), but we may need to give some attention to areas that are not currently on the plan.

MARYLAND HOME AND GARDEN PILGRIMAGE
(next MHGP Meeting Tues March 18th!)
On Sunday, May 18th, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (rain or shine), Oella will represent Baltimore County for this year’s tour program to celebrate Oella’s Bicentennial. The tour is an excellent opportunity to educate Marylanders about Oella’s rich history, dating back to the founding of the mill in 1808, and how the area has evolved into the thriving community that it is today. It's also good for boosting home sales. Great exposure!
Everyone is invited to tour restored and renovated properties in Oella. Eleven properties, consisting of log cabins, stone and wood frame homes, plus the Benjamin Banneker Park and Museum will be available to tour. Designated parking lots and shuttle service will be available.
Proceeds from the tour will be utilized to create a beautiful entrance to Oella on the corner of Frederick Road and Oella Avenue, adjacent to the Main Street bridge. The project, supported by the Oella Historical Society, will include a landscaped pathway lined with native plants and bench seating, and educational markers depicting the heritage of Oella and the Patapsco River valley.
Advance tickets are available at the Good Life Market at 3782 Old Columbia Pike, the Howard County Tourism Office at 8267 Main Street, and at the Catonsville Chamber of Commerce, 822 Frederick Road #A beginning March 18th for $30 each. In addition, tickets will be available on tour day at each home for $35. The 2008 tour book describing all five Maryland tours is included with each ticket purchase.
Many volunteers are needed to make this event a success. There are several opportunities to help out from working at the tour homes, welcoming tour goers, collecting tickets, room host/ hostesses, helping to direct tour goers to parking lots and shuttle stops. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Lisa Baum at 410-203-9210 or lknab_baum@yahoo.com.
Tour information and house descriptions are available on the Maryland Home and Garden Pilgrimage website at www.mhgp.org.
Please invite your friends and family! We hope to see you there!
P.S. Now is a great time to begin tidying up your property, even if your house is not on the tour. Let's show the world how beautiful Oella is!

We need your comments on parking permits
The time has come to consider implementing HOA parking permits now that the mill is finally going to open. Comments were solicited on this site many months ago, but the board would like the community's input once more before any policies are implemented.
The current thinking is that 2 small numbered hanging tags plus a temporary guest pass will be distributed for each house that does not have a private parking area/driveway. A sticker updating the year (and the validity of the tags) will be given out each year provided that dues are paid. For motorcycles, decals may be necessary instead of hanging tags. Guest passes will not be permitted to be used for permanent storage of vehicles. Violation of parking rules may result in towing (must be authorized by designated reps according to law).
Please submit your comments here to be forwarded to the board.

Stolen Mutt Mitts
Someone has been hitting several of the Mutt Mitt stations and removing all of the bags from the newly-filled dispensers. Please do not do that. It costs the HOA a lot of money, and that eventually translates into dues increases. The bags are provided for everyone to share.
If you hire a dog walker, please ask him or her not to take more bags than needed at that time.
If you spot someone stealing the bags, please report it to the board. Take a picture if you can!

Dog Poop Along Mill Property
Recently, there has been a lot of poop showing up along the mill property. We don't want mill residents' dogs leaving poop on our property, so it's not very considerate to leave it on theirs. Please plan ahead and take poop bags along. It is unsightly, bad for the environment, gets into our water supply, and promotes the spread of disease. It is illegal, and it does not provide useful fertilizer for the grass.
Please don't let Oella's streets turn into disgusting poop minefields!

Clean up Coopers Run this Saturday!
From Friends of the Patapsco Valley Heritage Greenway:
We hope you can join us for our upcoming stream clean up effort this Saturday, March 8, from 10 am – 1 pm in historic Oella (between Ellicott City and Catonsville).
Wear comfortable shoes and clothes. We recommend our volunteers wear long pants and shirt, so any prickly underbrush or insects won’t bother you! Chances are you may get wet, so you might want to wear appropriate clothes and water-proof shoes or boots. We also recommend you bring your own sunscreen and insect repellant. If you are allergic to insect bites or stings, please bring any needed medications and notify the stream captain of your allergy.
Unfortunately, there are no nearby restrooms available, so please plan accordingly.
Please bring your own work or garden gloves and a shovel if you have one. There are some large embedded items near the water that can only be removed with shovels. There is trash that has ended up in the stream coming from nearby storm drains off main highways, county roads and parking lots! This is a troublesome spot for trash and illegal dumping, and we need all the help we can get!
To get an idea of what happens during our cleanup events, please visit the website where we post photos of our volunteers in action at http://patapscofriend.myphotoalbum.com. We will provide bottled water and some snacks for our thirsty and hungry volunteers. It's hard work picking up this trash! You are welcome to bring your family and friends. Children under 16 are welcome if they are supervised by an adult volunteer.
This event will be cancelled in the event of rain. Before you leave for the event, we suggest you call our hotline at 410-480-0824. A recording will let you know whether or not the event has been cancelled.
Our volunteers will meet across the street from 413 Oella Avenue, in the gravel parking lot close to #9 Trolley Trail in Oella. For those of you who like to use MAPQUEST OR GOOGLE MAPS, the closest address to the stream is 413 Oella Avenue, Catonsville, MD 21228-5419.
