Car Break-in Season has begun!

There has been a recent upswing in car break-ins in the area. Several people on Short Brick Row have had things taken from their cars (locked or unlocked).

Please be sure to lock your car doors & call the police if there is anyone suspicious prowling around.

it may be time to resurrect Operation Porch Light. Please turn on your porch lights (with CFL bulbs, of course) from dawn to dusk. Home improvement stores have sensors that can be installed to automatically turn the lights on & off.

No dog pee in the flower beds!

Please do not let your dogs pee in the flower beds. We want our beautiful flowers to look their best. Dog urine kills plants (just check out the grass near any Mutt Mitt station). Some of the plants are herbs destined for human consumption, so please no pee! Do feel free to have your dog aim for some of the abundant sidewalk & invasive forest weeds!

Thanks for your help,

Blogger

P.S. I hear that coffee grounds in the flower beds will keep cats from using it as litter. Worth a try!

Community Beautification May 10, 10:00am--Spruce up Oella!

We are having a community-wide beautification/cleanup effort on May 10 beginning at 10:00am (9:00am for Spring Street). Please join your neighbors in sprucing up common areas and the streetscape. We currently have beautification teams at Spring Street, Long & Short Brick Row (along stone wall), and the Oella sign near Race Rd. & Pleasant Hill.

We will pull weeds, trim dead leaves from plants, sweep up debris, and plant flowers.

Whether you have 10 minutes or several hours, we can use your help! If you'd like to head up a crew in your area, please e-mail the blogger at laueram@yahoo.com. Otherwise, just join your neighbors outside. Bring work gloves and gardening tools if you have them.

Refreshments will be be provided.

Eco-Oella Tip #4: Turn off the A/C

Typical air cooling systems use huge amount of power. Wait to turn on the A/C until it is absolutely necessary. Keep your house cool on warm days by following these steps:

1) Close blinds & curtains during the day. Keep the windows CLOSED during this time.

2) Open windows at night to let the cool air in. Close again in the morning.

3) Plant a shade tree.

4). Use ceiling fans in occupied rooms. The moving air helps it feel cooler.

5) Turn off the "heated dry" setting on your dishwasher.

6) Dry clothes on racks, or partially dry with heat and then use "air dry."

Join in the Oella Flower Challenge!

The Oella House & Garden Pilgrimage is just around the corner (Sunday May 18). Please join in the celebration of Oella's bicentennial and show the world how beautiful we are!

Your task: plant a beautiful flower display outside your home in time for the tour. Annuals that will be in bloom in May include petunias, impatiens, begonias, and geraniums. Tuck them into pots, window boxes, or flower beds. Anything planted after May 1 should still be in good condition for the tour. Flowers can be out front, on the side of the house, or out back, but they must be VISIBLE to tour patrons.

Submit pictures of your display to the blogger (laueram@yahoo.com) by May 18. She will post all entries as they come in and again on May 19. Blog readers will vote on the best display. If you don't have a digital camera, notify the blogger. She will arrange to have a photo taken.

The house with the most votes will WIN a bottle of wine and the awe of your neighbors.

Eco-Oella Tip #3: Compost!

You can reduce the amount of garbage that goes into landfill by composting uncooked veggie & fruit scraps, coffee grounds, tea leaves, eggshells, and garden trimmings. Make sure you don't include dairy or meat products--animals will get into it.

It's easy to compost. Just throw it all in a compost bin or in a pile tucked away in your yard. In about 6 months, you have rich organic matter to add to your garden or spread on your lawn. Even easier version: just put the coffee grounds, tea leaves, & crushed eggshells directly in your garden.

Not only does it save landfill space, it reduces the fuel required for hauling (and helps keep our waste removal costs down).

Other ways to reduce waste & make your garden happy:
--pour leftover (cooled) coffee near the base of plants
--bury banana peels near roses
--use water from dehumidifiers to hydrate your garden
--leave short lawn clippings right on the lawn; they will break down into fertilizer

How to stop receiving the Examiner

Tired of the Examiner littering your walkway?

You can contact them directly to stop delivery, but the blogger has done this 3 times. Each time, the paper comes back after about 2 weeks.

Better option: contact Sam Moxley. He has been dealing with them for a year.

Send an e-mail to: council1@baltimorecountymd.gov requesting to be added to the list of patrons who do not wish to receive the Examiner.

Oella Mill Opening Day: April 5

The blogger just received word that the mill officially opens this Saturday. Wow!

Towing vehicles in HOA parking lots

There seems to be a misunderstanding regarding towing vehicles from HOA lots. It is a law, not an HOA policy, that the towing must be authorized by one of several HOA reps. It is part of the trespass towing laws, which the HOA towing company dutifully abides. The laws for towing from private property are different than the laws for parking illegally on the street. It is in place so that just anyone cannot tow your car for any reason. Otherwise, your neighbor who has a beef with you could just call up and have your car towed out of your spot.

If someone is parked in your assigned spot, contact the board (board@oellahoa.com).

P.S. The blogger has noticed some people who are not residents of Long Brick Row parking in the LBR lot to use the mill race trail. It is unclear if these parkers are HOA residents or not. If they are not, they are subject to towing; however, you need a pass in order to know if someone is an HOA resident.

Eco-Oella Tip # 2: Recycle newspapers & magazines

Paper is the largest source of trash in America. Recycling your paper saves trees & reduces air pollution by 95%. If everyone in the US did it, the effect would be like taking 5,511,566 cars off the road for one year.

Please do it. It's easy! Note: Baltimore County accepts pretty much all paper, except that with metallic foil on it.
