An article in the Frederick News-Post features Oella artist Kim Parr's unique landscapes (click on link above. Catch a glimpse of Kim's paintings at Hood College's Hodson Gallery or at her gallery on Main Street Ellicott City (the purple & pink building).
Two other Oellan-owned Main Street businesses were mentioned in the December issue of Baltimore Magazine as "craft-friendly" shops. Pop on in to Original Souls (8120 Main St.) and Art & Artisan (8020 Main St.) to pick up some hand crafted merchandise, some produced by local artists.
We've got many more creative people in Oella, and we'd love to hear about your work!

Noise from Mill garbage collection
For those of you who have been treated to the sounds of 5:30am garbage collection at the mill, you will be happy to know that Baltimore County officials have been made aware of the situation. They intend to enforce the "no noise before 7am" law.
Sometimes, even our neighborhood trash collection appears at awful hours of the morning. They are not supposed to do that.
To report early AM garbage collection noise or another garbage collection complaint, please use the contact information below or click on the link above to submit an online form.

The Blogger needs your help identifying funding sources
I am applying for as many grants and contests as I can to fund some of our long-term landscaping needs. These needs include stormwater runoff management, erosion control, removal of invasive weeds, increasing the tree canopy, and replacing high-maintenance "deer candy" plants with low-maintenance deer-resistant plants.
I have submitted a letter of inquiry to the Baltimore Community Foundation environmental grants program. I have applied for grants that supply money for plants sponsored by Aveeno and Nature Hill Nursery, as well as some contests. I have also contacted Councilman Moxley for direction. I've spent hours searching online, but I can't find much else that the HOA qualifies for.
Does anyone know of any other organizations that fund environmental enhancement projects? Any boyscout troops in need of a project? I'm willing to entertain just about any idea.
Thanks,
Amanda
P.S. Fiskars sponsors something called Project Orange Thumb that requires a "creative" component to the application (like a video). If anyone would be interested in taking on that part of the application, we could apply next year.

Save the HOA money on Mutt Mitts
Did you know that the HOA spends nearly $1000/year on POOP?
The Mutt Mitt costs have risen significantly as more dogs have moved into Oella. You can help us save money that is better spent on other things (e.g. landscaping, trail maintenance) and keep dues down by using your own bags to clean up after your pet. Newspaper bags and grocery bags work well, and you are re-purposing something that normally ends up in the trash. Pet stores also sell a selection of biodegradable bags--some even have a lavender scent!
Thanks for helping the HOA make the most of your dollars!

Celebrate the legacy of Benjamin Banneker and other black pioneers Saturday, Feb, 14 at 1 p.m. at the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park
Join County Executive Jim Smith in celebrating the legacy of Benjamin Banneker and other black pioneers Saturday, Feb, 14 at 1 p.m. at the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park and Museum at 300 Oella Ave. The event is free and open to the public.
The museum is a wonderful place to learn about Banneker and his amazing life.
Banneker (1731-1806) lived in a cabin near what is now Old Frederick Road and Oella Avenue.
A free black tobacco planter, he taught himself mathematics and astronomy late in life.
He produced calculations for the Banneker almanacs and participated in the survey of the Federal Territory that is now Washington.

Free Compost & Mulch
Looking to do some landscaping around your yard? We can help! Baltimore County residents can get free compost and mulch at the Eastern Sanitary Landfill and Solid Waste Management Facility (ESL) in White Marsh. Residents must bring and fill their own containers.
Mulch is mainly comprised of ground and shredded tree limbs. Residents and the Bureau of Highways bring the tree limbs to ESL, and then landfill employees use a tubgrinder to process the wood into mulch.
Compost is comprised mainly of grass, leaves, bush trims, plants and small branches that residents have set out, generally in plastic bags for collection in the County's yard materials recycling program or brought to ESL. These materials (contents and bags) are placed in "windrows" and processed. Finished materials are screened to remove unwanted and large pieces of material. However, small pieces of plastic may still be present in the compost.
The County makes no guarantees about the quality or composition of either product. The individual user assumes all risks and responsibilities associated with the use of these materials.
Compost and mulch are available on a "First Come First Served" basis. Please call the customer service line, 410-887-2000 (M-F, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.) before going to ESL to check on the supply of these materials. The directions and hours of operation for ESL are available by clicking on the link above.

Clearing ice from HOA parking lots
There have been several complaints regarding clearing of ice in the HOA lots. The community manager, Ruthann Shae, is working to address the problem. Please be aware of several things:
1) It is not possible for the plow to clear snow/ice from spaces or between spaces that cars are parked in. Please make use of the salt or ice melt stored in the salt boxes if you have a slick spot by your car.
2) There is a rock salt shortage.
3) Have patience. When there is a lot of snow or ice, it takes a while to get around to each parking lot. There is only one guy working on it.
As of Saturday morning, Clark's Ace Hardware on Rt. 40 (past Centennial Lane) had both ice melt and rock salt in stock. We are likely to get hit tonight/tomorrow with another storm, so please stock up.
